Community Description

go to top ^

Penbrooke Meadows is located in the southeast quadrant of the city. It is bordered on the north by Memorial Drive and on the south by 17th Avenue. Penbrooke Meadows was annexed by Calgary in 1961 and developed in 1969. The area has good access to major traffic routes, and there are employment opportunities in nearby industrial parks. There are a number of parks in the area. There are both public and separate schools in the area.

The Penbrooke Meadows community association is quite active. The community centre is home to a variety of groups and programs including Girl Guides, Brownies, Scouts, moms timeout and the Youth Action Project. The Youth Action Project is a Safer Communities initiative that prevents kids and youth from becoming involved in crime by promoting recreational opportunities, engaging in self esteem building and addressing bullying and harassment issues. The community also houses a dart league and hosts the popular Wednesday night wing night. Along with the main hall, the community also contains a smaller hall that is used by the Boys and Girls club and houses a teen drop-in center. The community center also facilitates sports programs with the neighboring community of Applewood. Special events such as entertainment evenings and dances are also held.
