The Competition is Now Closed...
The 10 Finalists will be on display in the plus 15 between Bankers Hall and TD Square Friday, September 17th from 10am until 6pm
SUBMISSIONS:
- Digital submissions only (no paper copies please)
- Content must be appropriate for all-ages
- Content must include "scenes that depict community life" in the form of social, recreational, or educational interactions
- Photographs can be submitted from any date in history, and may be in black & white or colour
- Vertical or horizontal layout is fine
- Images must be a minimum of 3 MB and 200-300 pixels per inch
- The written descriptor for your image(s) must include: photographers full name, age, community, and 2-4 sentences explaining why your image(s) represents community life to you
RULES:
- This is an all-ages competition
- Submission is free
- No working professional photographers (defined as someone who receives money in exchange for their work
- A maximum of 2 images may be submitted per person (only one image will be selected by jurors to be entered into competition)
- No image missing a written descriptor will be eligible for competition
- No submission missing a photo/quotation release waiver will be accepted into competition
JUDGING CRITERIA:
- Each image will be reviewed by a panel of four judges consisting of Calgary arts professionals and Federation of Calgary Communities Staff of a maximum (2) submitted images, only (1) will be selected by jurors to be entered into competition. This image will be graded by:
- Relevance to theme – Refers to how accurately the photographer has observed the theme and represented it clearly to the viewer. We are looking for images that depict scenes of community life. The photographer’s written descriptor will be considered in making this judgment.
- Creativity – Refers to the idea that is being conveyed
- Composition – Refers to the visual balance of various elements of the image (use of shapes, lighting, focus)
- Overall Impression – Addresses the image as a whole, and is often based on the first glimpse of the photograph. Without regard to the other criteria, does it stand on its own as a good and complete image?
JUDGING PROCESS:
- Four Judges will give each individual image entered into competition a score out of (100). These four scores will be added together, then divided by (4) to attain a final score average. Breakdown of the score, with a perfect score equal to (100):
- Relevance to theme – (30) points
- Creativity – (20) points
- Composition – (20) points
- Overall Impression – (30) points
FINAL SELECTIONS:
- If deemed necessary by the jury panel, a second round of judging may be completed to re-evaluate top “finalist” selections for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place awardees.
- “Finalist” images will be printed and displayed Friday September 17th at a public showing downtown, details coming soon.
- 1st, 2nd and 3rd place awardees will be declared after the public showing, and all participants will be notified.
- The Federation of Calgary Communities will be keeping all printed “finalist” images for future display purposes.
