We can assist communities in the development and interpretation of their bylaws.
It is important that your governing documents be current; your Registered Objects and Organizational Bylaws supported by current policies, to provide direction to the elected Board of Directors. If the documents are not current, decisions or actions may be taken that breach the Bylaws which could jeopardize the organization's Incorporation or risk liability. The Federation of Calgary Communities provides consultative assistance in Bylaw interpretation, drafting and revising Bylaws, and support in taking proposed amendments to the community membership.
The Federation of Calgary Communities can also help communities in the interpretation of their bylaws (based on "Robert's Rules of Order").

It is essential to an organization to have Board Policies and Operational Procedures to ensure effective governance and operation of the organization. Because the process for amending Polices is done by the Board of Directors and Operational Procedures are amended by the Board of Directors or Senior Staff, changes can be responsive to need. The Federation of Calgary Communities provides consultative assistance and suggests Policies that should be considered.
The Federation of Calgary Communities offers consultative services in this area, and for more extensive conflicts will recommend that the individuals contact Community Mediation Calgary Society (CMCS) for their mediation services. the Federation of Calgary Communities was co-founder, with Alberta Arbitration and Mediation Association in forming the CMCS. The Federation of Calgary Communities and/or CMCS has dealt with Board conflicts, resident to resident conflicts, and community development issues. As well CMCS has been a valued source of assistance in facilitation of difficult meetings.
Community Association's are not recognized as a Community Association until duly Incorporated under the provincial Societies Act. The following factors are required: name search, registered Objects, registered organizational Bylaws, and witnessed signatures of (5) five persons.
Obtaining federal Charity Status, for Income Tax Purposes, with Canada Customs and Revenue Agency is more difficult. The actual process is not difficult - but approval is. The advantage of Charitable status is a greater source for donations, and tax deductible receipts can be issued for donations or gifts in kind. There are deterrents; Community Associations do not get a lot of donations, the need for annual reporting, the limited definitions of charitable purposes, and the lengthy approval process. There are 22 Calgary Communities currently registered as federal Charities
